Description

Proto Malayid proper type. Relatively old element that probably arrived in the Sunda Archipelago during the period of land bridges in the late Pleistocene. Today in its highest concentrations in the Lesser Sunda Islands like Sumba, Flores, Timor up to Kisar. Also common in the Maluku Islands (Aru, Lei, Tanimbar, Ceram, Ambon, Buru), West Tenggarese of Java, and in Siberut in the west of Sumatra. Occasionally across Indonesia and even in parts of Melanesia.

Physical traits

Medium, sometimes dark brown skin, wavy or curly hair. Rather short, meso- brachyskelic, ectomorph. Mesocephalic, orthocranic. Mesorrhine, sometimes platyrrhine, often deep-rooted nose. Forehead and mandible narrow, face relatively low. Eyes only weakly slanting. Mild prognathy common.

The core Proto Malayid element was defined by Glinka (1978, 1981, 1987), Glinka et al. (2010). Earlier classifications had included Dayakids and similar types in Proto Malayid (Sarasin, 1905; Eickstedt, 1934; Weinert, 1965).
